Why Barca may not sign Rashford in the June transfer window

Barcelona’s chances of completing a permanent move for Marcus Rashford ahead of the June 2026 transfer window appear to be fading, despite earlier reports linking the Manchester United forward with a long-term stay at Camp Nou.
The Catalan giants are now reportedly close to sealing a blockbuster deal for Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon, a move that could effectively end their pursuit of Rashford.
According to reports, Gordon is set to undergo a medical in Spain on Thursday after Barcelona reached an agreement with Newcastle worth around £69 million. The England international has emerged as a priority target for manager Hansi Flick, who views him as a key addition to his attacking setup for next season.
Gordon’s expected arrival would significantly reduce Barcelona’s need to invest heavily in Rashford following his loan spell. While the Manchester United star impressed during parts of last season, Barcelona’s ongoing financial limitations mean the club must carefully manage major spending decisions.
With Gordon likely to play a central role in Flick’s frontline, a permanent move for Rashford reportedly valued at around £26 million ($35 million) — now looks increasingly unlikely.
One of the major factors behind Barcelona’s push for Gordon is his tactical versatility. The former Everton winger is capable of playing on either flank as well as through the middle, offering Flick greater flexibility alongside attacking stars Lamine Yamal and Raphinha.
At 25 years old, Gordon is also viewed as a stronger fit for Barcelona’s long-term rebuilding project compared to Rashford, whose future at Manchester United remains uncertain heading into the summer window.
Unless there is a dramatic late twist, Barcelona’s focus now appears firmly set on securing Gordon’s signature rather than pursuing a permanent deal for Rashford.
