Eric Chelle Uncertain About Super Eagles Future After AFCON 2025 Semifinal Exit

Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has provided an update on his future with the Nigerian national team following their dramatic exit from the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Nigeria’s AFCON title hopes came to an end on Wednesday night after a tense semifinal clash against host nation Morocco in Rabat. The encounter remained goalless after 120 minutes of regulation and extra time, before the Super Eagles were defeated 4–2 in a penalty shootout.

Despite the disappointment, Nigeria still has an opportunity to finish the tournament on a high note, with a third-place playoff against Egypt scheduled for Saturday.

Chelle Addresses Uncertainty Over His Role

Speaking during his post-match press conference, Chelle admitted that his future as head coach of the Super Eagles remains uncertain once the tournament concludes.

“At the moment, I don’t know what will happen next,” Chelle said. “I am Nigeria’s coach today, but in two days my president may tell me it is over, or he may ask me to continue. I honestly don’t know.”

The Malian tactician, however, took time to commend his players for their performance throughout the competition, expressing pride in the team despite the painful exit.

“I feel proud of my players, even though I am disappointed for them,” he stated. “In my opinion, we were maybe the best team at this AFCON. That is why it hurts, but we have to react.”

Focus Remains on Final Match

Chelle emphasized that discussions regarding his contract or long-term future are not a priority at this stage, insisting that full attention must remain on the final game of the tournament.

“This is not the moment to talk about my situation,” he added. “The AFCON is not finished yet. We still have one more game, and our focus must be on winning that match.”

With a bronze medal still at stake, the Super Eagles will be determined to turn their semifinal disappointment into motivation as they prepare to face Egypt, aiming to conclude their AFCON 2025 campaign on a positive note.
