Morocco Break Nigeria’s FIFA World Cup Record After Historic Round of 32 Qualification
Morocco have etched their name deeper into African football history after becoming the continent’s most successful nation in FIFA World Cup history, surpassing Nigeria’s long-standing record for the most tournament victories.
The Atlas Lions achieved the milestone following a dramatic 4-2 comeback victory over Haiti in their final Group C fixture at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The result not only secured Morocco’s place in the Round of 32 but also handed them their seventh FIFA World Cup victory, moving them ahead of Nigeria, who previously held the African record with six wins.
Heading into the tournament, Nigeria stood alone as the continent’s most successful nation in terms of World Cup match victories. Morocco entered the competition with five wins and quickly closed the gap through an impressive group-stage campaign.
A narrow 1-0 victory over Scotland saw the North Africans draw level with the Super Eagles on six wins before their thrilling triumph over Haiti elevated them into sole possession of the record.
Morocco’s rise has been one of the most remarkable stories in modern international football. The Atlas Lions captured global attention at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar by becoming the first African nation to reach the semi-finals of the competition.
Four years later, they have continued their historic ascent by setting another continental benchmark.
Against Haiti, Morocco showed tremendous resilience after twice coming from behind. Goals from Achraf Hakimi, Ismael Saibari, Soufiane Rahimi, and Gessime Yassine completed an impressive comeback, sealing a memorable 4-2 victory and confirming their place in the knockout stages as Group C runners-up behind Brazil.
Breaking Nigeria’s long-standing record further underlines Morocco’s emergence as one of the world’s leading football nations and reflects the continued growth of African football on the global stage.
While Nigeria’s achievements over previous World Cup tournaments helped establish Africa’s reputation on football’s biggest stage, Morocco have now raised the bar for future generations.
With the knockout rounds still to come, the Atlas Lions have the opportunity to extend their record even further as they continue their pursuit of another historic FIFA World Cup campaign.
