Senegal Retain U-17 AFCON Crown After Penalty Shootout Victory Over Tanzania

Defending champions Senegal once again underlined their status as one of Africa’s premier youth football nations, defeating Tanzania 4-2 on penalties after a hard-fought 1-1 draw in the final of the 2026 U-17 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Rabat, Morocco.

The Young Lions of Teranga were forced to come from behind after Tanzania’s Hamis Chenga gave his side an early lead in the seventh minute. However, Senegal responded with determination, and Ibrahima Dione restored parity in the second half to send the contest into a tense penalty shootout.

When the decisive moment arrived, Senegal held their nerve from the spot, converting all four of their penalties to successfully defend the continental title and cap off another impressive tournament campaign.

Their triumph was built on consistency and resilience throughout the competition. Senegal finished top of their group before overcoming a challenging knockout route that included victories over Mali in the quarter-finals and hosts Morocco in a dramatic semi-final decided by penalties.

Goalkeeper Assane Sarr emerged as one of the standout performers of the tournament, particularly in the semi-final against Morocco, where his crucial saves helped propel Senegal into the final. His performances throughout the competition highlighted the team’s defensive strength and composure under pressure.

All three of Senegal’s knockout matches tested their character, with the reigning champions repeatedly demonstrating their ability to respond to adversity. Against Tanzania, they recovered quickly after conceding early, controlled large periods of the match, and displayed remarkable composure when the title was decided from the penalty spot.

The latest success further strengthens Senegal’s growing reputation as a powerhouse in African youth football. In recent years, the country has enjoyed sustained success across both senior and youth levels, driven by a well-structured player development system that continues to produce some of the continent’s most promising talents.

By successfully defending their U-17 AFCON crown, Senegal have once again showcased the strength of their footballing pipeline and reinforced their position among Africa’s elite football nations.
