Eric Chelle Reacts to Super Eagles’ AFCON 2025 Defeat in Morocco

The head coach of the Super Eagles of Nigeria, Eric Chelle, has shared his thoughts following Nigeria’s defeat to Morocco at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The Super Eagles went into the tournament determined to claim the AFCON title, especially after the disappointment of the 2023 edition hosted in Côte d’Ivoire and their failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. However, their hopes were dashed after a dramatic loss to hosts Morocco, decided by a penalty shootout.

Speaking after the match, Chelle admitted that his team fell short of the standards they had set earlier in the tournament. He pointed to a noticeable drop in technical quality and intensity at key moments of the game, explaining that the Super Eagles struggled to impose themselves in the same way they had in previous matches.

Despite the setback, the Malian tactician was clear that fatigue was not an excuse. Instead, he emphasized that fine margins, small details, and decision-making ultimately worked against his side on the night.

“Our technicality was not like the same from the last match. I don’t want to say we were tired, but that’s not the level,” Chelle said.

Chelle also addressed criticism surrounding the penalty shootout, defending his choices and explaining that decisions were made based on training performances and player confidence.

“We put Chukwueze for penalties because the guys who kicked the penalties were the best in training,” he explained. “The match was never easy, but the players showed strong mentality and fought for every ball. We worked hard throughout the tournament. This is football, and we must continue working.”

The Super Eagles coach went on to praise the mentality and commitment of his players, noting that they showed character and determination until the final whistle. He stressed that penalties are always unpredictable and should not overshadow the overall effort and progress made by the team during the competition.

Looking ahead, Chelle emphasized the importance of regrouping quickly and finishing the tournament on a positive note, with focus already shifting to the third-place playoff. He also hinted that discussions regarding his future with the Super Eagles would take place after the tournament, insisting that his priority remains firmly on the team and their immediate objectives.
