Two clubs have officially secured automatic promotion to the English top flight following impressive campaigns in the EFL Championship ahead of the 2026/27 Premier League season.
Ipswich Town F.C. confirmed their return to the Premier League after finishing in the automatic promotion spots. Their consistency throughout the season, particularly in attack and defensive organisation, helped them avoid the uncertainty of the playoff route and secure promotion on merit.
Alongside them, Derby County F.C. also sealed automatic promotion following a strong and disciplined campaign. The Rams maintained their form under pressure during the closing stages of the season, edging out rivals to finish inside the top two.
The final promotion spot was secured by Hull City A.F.C. after a dramatic 1-0 victory over Middlesbrough F.C. in the Championship playoff final at Wembley Stadium. Oli McBurnie scored the decisive goal deep into stoppage time, sending the Tigers back to the Premier League for the first time in nine years.
Hull City’s promotion completes a remarkable campaign, especially after dealing with financial and off-field difficulties earlier in the season. Their return to the top flight is expected to deliver a major financial boost, with reports suggesting promotion could generate close to £200 million through broadcasting rights, sponsorships, and commercial revenue.
Hull City now join Ipswich Town and Derby County as the three promoted clubs set to compete in the 2026/27 Premier League season.
