​When 5G technology officially debuted in Nigeria in August 2022, it was met with immense excitement. Promising ultra-fast internet speeds, low latency, and a new era of digital transformation, it was hailed as the backbone of the nation's next technological revolution.

​However, fast forward to today, and a pressing question lingers across Nigeria's tech ecosystem: Where is 5G now?

​In a compelling opinion piece originally published by veteran media and telecoms analyst Okoh Aihe, the nation's current 5G reality is laid bare contrasting the hype of artificial intelligence (AI) with the premature stagnation of Nigeria’s 5G network expansion.

Despite major operators like MTN, Airtel, and Mafab Communications launching 5G services, adoption remains a tiny fraction of Nigeria's total mobile subscriber base.

​Why has Nigeria's 5G growth stalled while other developing markets have thrived? Aihe points to a critical contrast in regulatory strategy between Nigeria and India, both of which auctioned 5G spectrum around the same time in mid-2022:

​1. High Upfront Costs (Nigeria's Approach)

​During Nigeria's 5G auctions, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) sold spectrum licenses at steep prices MTN and Mafab paid over $273 million each, while Airtel later acquired its license for $316 million. By demanding massive lump-sum payments upfront to generate immediate government revenue, regulators drained capital that telecom companies desperately needed for network infrastructure, tower deployment, and coverage expansion.

​2. Creative Amortization (India's Approach)

​In contrast, India's regulator (TRAI) raised $19 billion across its operators but structured payments into equal annual installments over a 20-year period. This decision allowed telecom providers to preserve their immediate capital for rapid network deployment.

​The Result: India achieved over 500 million 5G users and nearly 99% coverage within two years, whereas Nigeria remains stuck under 7 million connections.

​The Shift to AI: Leaving Infrastructure Behind?

​The article notes that much of the public and governmental enthusiasm has shifted toward Artificial Intelligence. While initiatives like Nigeria’s National Artificial Intelligence Strategy (NAIS) spearheaded by the Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy are vital steps forward, AI applications heavily rely on robust underlying digital infrastructure.

​Without reliable, wide-reaching broadband connections like 5G, advanced technologies like AI, smart cities, cloud computing, and industrial automation cannot reach their full potential.

​Re-evaluate Licensing Frameworks: Future spectrum allocations should prioritize network deployment commitments over maximum upfront revenue generation.

​Address Device Accessibility: High prices for 5G-enabled smartphones remain a major barrier for everyday consumers; targeted financing models or import duty relief could accelerate adoption.

​For Nigeria to truly participate in the global digital economy, regulators must revisit the 5G ecosystem, remove structural hurdles, and fulfill the original promise of high-speed connectivity for all.
