Texas Attorney General Sues Netflix Over Consumer Data Collection and Addictive Design Claims

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has filed a lawsuit against Netflix, accusing the streaming giant of illegally collecting user data without proper consent and intentionally designing its platform to keep users addicted.

According to the lawsuit filed on Monday, the state of Texas claims that Netflix violated consumer privacy rights by allegedly spying on users through extensive data collection practices. Attorney General Paxton argues that the company gathered personal information from consumers without clearly informing them or obtaining valid permission.

The lawsuit also targets Netflix’s platform design, alleging that the company intentionally created features aimed at increasing user dependency and maximizing screen time. Texas officials claim these design choices were engineered to encourage compulsive viewing behavior among subscribers.

The case adds to growing scrutiny facing major technology and streaming companies over data privacy, user tracking, and the psychological effects of digital platforms. Regulators across the United States and other countries have increasingly challenged how companies collect consumer information and use engagement-driven algorithms.

Netflix has not yet publicly responded in detail to the allegations.

The lawsuit could become a significant legal battle over digital privacy rights and the responsibilities of streaming platforms in protecting consumer data.
