Bandits Attack Christ Apostolic Church in Kwara, Kill Worshippers and Abduct Pastor

The wave of insecurity sweeping across parts of Nigeria has taken another tragic turn, this time targeting a place of worship in Kwara State. Bandits attacked a branch of the Christ Apostolic Church (CAC) at Oke Isegun in the Eruku community, a border town with Kogi State in the Ekiti Local Government Area, abducting an unconfirmed number of worshippers and leaving several casualties.

The incident occurred on Tuesday evening, November 18, 2025, during a live-streamed church service. A video from the stream captures the moment worshippers, led by a young pastor, were holding a service when sudden bursts of gunfire erupted around the church premises. Panic immediately followed as congregants fled in different directions before armed men were seen entering the church hall.

According to community sources, the attack began around 6 p.m. and involved more than five gunmen who stormed the building, ransacked the worship center, and made away with the personal belongings of members.

A witness quoted by The Punch revealed that three worshippers were killed on the spot, while the pastor and an unspecified number of congregants were marched into the nearby bush.

“The gunmen came into the church while people were gathered. They started shooting, and three people died immediately. They later rounded up some worshippers, including the pastor, and marched them into the bush,” the witness recounted.

Community Pleas Ignored

Residents say Eruku has suffered repeated bandit attacks in the last three weeks. Community leader Benjamin Ayeoribe expressed frustration, claiming numerous distress calls to authorities have not produced any meaningful response.

“We have begged the local and state governments for help, but nothing concrete has come. We are living in fear every day,” he said.

Police Confirm Incident

Kwara State Police Command spokesperson Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi confirmed the attack but did not provide details on the number of people abducted. She stated that operatives, working with local vigilantes, responded swiftly to what she described as “an attempted bandit attack in Eruku.”

According to her report, the bandits fled into the bush after security operatives intervened. She also confirmed that three people sustained fatal gunshot wounds: Mr. Aderemi, who was found inside the church; Mr. Tunde Asaba Ajayi, whose body was discovered in the bush; and vigilante member Segun Alaja, who was injured and rushed to ECWA Hospital, Eruku.

A Disturbing Trend of Violence

This incident comes just 48 hours after bandits attacked Government Girls Secondary School in Maga, Kebbi State, abducting 25 schoolgirls. The frequency of attacks has fueled growing concerns nationwide, especially amid claims of targeted violence against Christian communities.

As insecurity escalates, residents and religious groups continue to call for immediate government action to protect vulnerable communities and restore peace.
