Tems Makes History as First African Female Artist to Top the UK Singles Chart
Nigerian superstar Tems has etched her name into music history by becoming the first African female artist to reach Number 1 on the Official UK Singles Chart.
Her collaboration with British rapper Dave, titled “Raindance,” climbed to the top spot on Friday, marking a monumental achievement for Afrobeats and highlighting the genre’s ever-growing global influence. The milestone further establishes Tems as one of Africa’s most powerful musical exports and a dominant force in the international music scene.
A Slow-Burning Rise to the Top
Unlike many chart-toppers that debut at Number 1, Raindance followed a steady and organic climb. The track, featured on Dave’s 2025 album The Boy Who Played the Harp, initially entered the UK Top 40 before gradually building momentum over several months.
Its popularity surged during the winter, fueled by a viral social media dance challenge and a visually captivating music video shot in Lagos. After holding the Number 2 position the previous week, the song finally claimed the top spot, overtaking Djo’s “End of Beginning.”
Critical Acclaim and Musical Fusion
Music critics have praised Raindance for its seamless blend of Dave’s introspective rap style and Tems’ soulful, commanding vocals. The track has been described as a powerful fusion of UK rap and African musical influence, showcasing the strength of cross-cultural collaboration.
Breaking Barriers for African Female Artists
While African male artists such as Wizkid and Burna Boy have previously enjoyed strong success on the UK charts, no African female artist had ever reached Number 1 until now.
Tems had previously come close with globally successful tracks like her feature on Future’s “Wait For U” and her collaboration with Wizkid on “Essence,” both of which achieved major international recognition without topping the UK chart.
Another Milestone for Dave
For Dave, Raindance becomes his fourth UK Number 1 single, adding to an impressive list that includes “Funky Friday,” “Starlight,” and “Sprinter.”
A Defining Moment for Afrobeats
Tems’ historic achievement is more than a personal victory it represents a breakthrough moment for African women in global music and further confirms Afrobeats as a dominant force on the world stage.
With this milestone, Tems continues to reshape narratives, open doors for future generations, and prove that African artistry belongs at the very top of the global charts.
