The organisers of the prestigious Headies Awards have explained the decision to stage the 18th edition of the event in Toronto, Canada, in 2026, describing the move as part of a broader strategy to expand the platform’s global reach while continuing to support Nigeria’s thriving creative industry.

The announcement was made during “The Big Announcement” event held at Eko Hotels and Suites in Lagos on Monday. The gathering attracted key entertainment stakeholders, government officials, industry leaders, and members of the media.

Speaking at the event, Headies founder, Ayo Animashaun, confirmed that Toronto would host the main awards ceremony. However, he emphasized that Nigeria would remain central to the celebration through a simultaneous watch party and live connection between Lagos and Canada.

According to Animashaun, the organisers are committed to ensuring that Nigerian fans remain actively involved despite the international location of the ceremony.

“We’re going to Toronto for the 18th Headies, but we’re not leaving Nigeria behind. We’re going to have a watch party between Toronto and Lagos,” he said.

Addressing concerns about taking the awards outside Nigeria once again, Animashaun noted that financial sustainability remains a major consideration for the event’s organisers. He stressed that sponsorship and funding opportunities play a crucial role in determining where the awards can be successfully staged.

“Someone said, ‘Ayo, you are taking the Headies out of the country again.’ Tell me what makes sense. Does it make sense for us not to do it anymore? So how do we fund it? Sponsors,” he stated.

The organisers explained that hosting the event in Canada aligns with efforts to strengthen the global influence of Nigerian music and showcase the country’s creative talent to a wider international audience.

While excitement continues to build around the announcement, the official date for the 18th Headies Awards has not yet been revealed.

According to the organisers, the decision was driven by two key factors:
