Spain–Barcelona Rift Deepens Over Lamine Yamal’s Surprise Medical Procedure

Tensions between the Spanish national football team and FC Barcelona have reignited following a fresh controversy involving teenage sensation Lamine Yamal.

The Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) has voiced its “surprise and concern” after learning that the 18-year-old winger underwent a groin procedure without the federation’s prior knowledge just as he was due to join Spain’s camp for their World Cup qualifiers against Georgia (Nov 15) and Turkey (Nov 18).

According to the RFEF, medical staff were informed only on Monday, November 10, hours after the procedure had already taken place. A later report recommended 7–10 days of rest, prompting Spain to release the player from international duty.

“I had never experienced a situation like that,” said Spain manager Luis de la Fuente. “You don’t know, you haven’t heard anything, and then you’re told there’s a health issue. It’s very surprising.”

Yamal had featured in Barcelona’s 4-2 win over Celta Vigo the previous weekend, scoring a goal before being substituted in stoppage time. Barcelona’s medical team then reportedly conducted a radiofrequency treatment to address recurring discomfort in his pubic area.

In an official statement, the RFEF emphasised that the intervention was performed “without prior notification to the national team’s medical staff.” The federation described its reaction as one of “concern” and reaffirmed its focus on the player’s health and safety.

To fill the vacancy, Rayo Vallecano’s Jorge de Frutos has been called up as Yamal’s replacement.

A Pattern of Friction

This latest episode continues a series of disputes between Barcelona and the Spanish federation over player management and communication.

Back in September, Barcelona manager Hansi Flick publicly criticised Spain for allegedly mismanaging Yamal’s fitness during international duty. The young forward, who had joined the national team nursing a minor groin issue, returned to his club in worse condition missing four subsequent matches.

Tensions resurfaced in October, when De la Fuente again included Yamal in his squad only for Barcelona to declare shortly afterward that he was injured. The RFEF countered that the player had reported “no physical complaints” upon arrival.

Now, on the eve of the November internationals, the rift appears deeper than ever.

Barcelona’s Defence

Sources within Barcelona maintain that their actions were taken responsibly and in coordination with the player, with the sole aim of ensuring his full recovery. The club insists that its medical department remains in regular contact with the RFEF despite the current misunderstanding.

What’s Next

Spain, the reigning Euro 2024 champions, currently top Group E with a three-point lead over Turkey and will look to seal qualification without their teenage prodigy.

For both Luis de la Fuente and Hansi Flick, however, the Yamal saga underscores a broader tension between club and country a recurring struggle over player welfare that continues to test the fragile balance between national pride and professional management.
