Enzo Maresca Reflects on Chelsea’s Champions League Defeat to Bayern Munich
Enzo Maresca and his Chelsea side fell short in their opening UEFA Champions League test, suffering defeat to Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena.
The Blues entered the competition on a high, having recently lifted the Club World Cup after beating Paris Saint-Germain. Many expected Chelsea to make a strong statement against the Bundesliga champions, but Bayern’s experience proved too much.
The hosts took the lead through an unfortunate own goal from Trevoh Chalobah, before Harry Kane doubled the advantage from the penalty spot. Cole Palmer quickly responded to pull Chelsea back into the game, but any hopes of a comeback faded when Malo Gusto’s mistake gifted Kane his second and Bayern’s third.
Speaking after the match, Maresca praised the effort of his young squad but admitted that inexperience played a decisive role in the outcome.
“I think in the first 20 minutes we started very well, created two chances without conceding anything. Then we conceded a goal we could avoid, and the dynamic changed a little. In terms of experience between them and us, there is a huge difference because of the games they’ve played, because of the age. But we competed in the right way, in this stadium, against this team. I have the feeling we can build something special from this defeat.”
Chelsea will now turn their attention to their next Champions League clash, where they face Jose Mourinho’s Benfica at Stamford Bridge.
