Gianni Infantino Breaks Silence on Folarin Balogun Red Card Controversy at 2026 FIFA World Cup

FIFA President Gianni Infantino has addressed the controversy surrounding Folarin Balogun’s overturned red card at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, insisting that FIFA’s independent judicial bodies operate without external influence.

Balogun was initially shown a straight red card during the United States’ World Cup match, a decision that immediately sparked widespread debate among supporters, football analysts and former referees. While many argued that the dismissal was overly harsh, others questioned the effectiveness of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system in reviewing the incident.

Following a review by FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee, the suspension was overturned, making the United States striker available for the remainder of the tournament. The decision divided opinion, with some praising FIFA for correcting an officiating error, while others raised concerns over consistency in disciplinary rulings.

What did Gianni Infantino say about Folarin Balogun’s red card?

Responding to the growing public debate, Infantino reaffirmed the independence of FIFA’s disciplinary process and dismissed suggestions that outside influence played any role in the final decision.

He said:

“I have seen the public comments regarding the decision of the independent FIFA Disciplinary Committee related to the suspension of Folarin Balogun, and I would like to reiterate a fundamental principle of FIFA’s governance. FIFA’s judicial bodies are independent. They operate autonomously, apply the FIFA Disciplinary Code, and decide cases based on the applicable regulations and the specific facts before them. Their independence is essential to the credibility and integrity of football, and this must always be respected.

“Yes, I regularly discuss matters related to the FIFA World Cup with the President of the United States, and on this matter, I did receive a call from President Donald Trump, just as I receive calls from heads of state, government officials, football stakeholders and business executives from around the world on many different issues.

“During our conversation, I explained that there was an ongoing legal process involving FIFA’s independent judicial bodies and that the case would be decided in due course by the competent bodies. That is how FIFA’s system works, and it is a principle that I will always uphold.”

Infantino explained that football’s disciplinary procedures are designed to protect the integrity of the game by ensuring controversial incidents are thoroughly reviewed after matches when necessary. He acknowledged that referees often have to make split-second decisions under immense pressure, while the post-match review process exists as an additional safeguard to correct clear and obvious mistakes.

The FIFA president also reiterated his confidence in match officials and the VAR system, stressing that neither referees nor technology are infallible. According to Infantino, the willingness to acknowledge and correct errors is a key part of preserving fairness and maintaining trust in football’s officiating standards.

The successful appeal means Balogun remains available for the United States as they continue their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign, providing a major boost to the team’s attacking options heading into the knockout stages.

The incident has reignited calls for greater transparency in football officiating, with many supporters and pundits urging FIFA to provide clearer explanations whenever major disciplinary decisions are overturned.
