AFCON 2025: Coach Eric Chelle Unveils Strong Provisional Super Eagles Squad Ahead of Morocco Showpiece

With excitement building ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco, Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has announced a broad and highly competitive provisional squad one that reflects Nigeria’s depth, ambition, and determination to reclaim continental glory.

The newly released list features an impressive blend of established stars, returning talents, and promising newcomers, all vying for a place in the final 28-man squad that will fly Nigeria’s flag on Africa’s biggest football stage. The announcement marks the start of the final phase of preparation, as each player now enters a crucial battle to secure their spot.

Goalkeepers: Stability and Renewed Competition

The goalkeeping department brings familiarity and confidence, with Stanley Nwabali and Maduka Okoye headlining the selection. Both keepers have enjoyed strong form at club level and are expected to compete intensely for the No. 1 shirt. They are joined by new challengers eager to make an impression in camp and potentially force their way into Chelle’s final plans.

Defence: Leadership, Experience, and New Energy

In defence, captain William Troost-Ekong remains the anchor and leader at the back. He is supported by trusted names such as Calvin Bassey, Semi Ajayi, Zaidu Sanusi, and Ola Aina. The coach has also included fresh faces from both Europe and the NPFL, adding depth, competition, and tactical flexibility to the backline.

Midfield: Depth, Creativity, and Balance

Nigeria’s midfield continues to be one of its strongest assets. The provisional list features a balanced mix of creativity, defensive intelligence, and versatility. Wilfred Ndidi, Alex Iwobi, Frank Onyeka, and Raphael Onyedika headline the group, providing options across all central areas from ball-winning duties to playmaking roles. Several emerging midfield talents have also been included, offering Chelle additional ways to adjust tempo, structure, and strategy throughout the tournament.

Attack: Firepower Ready to Terrorize Defences

Up front, the Super Eagles’ attack remains as dangerous as ever. Victor Osimhen leads the line, spearheading a fearsome collection of forwards that includes Ademola Lookman, Samuel Chukwueze, Moses Simon, and other explosive attackers. Their mix of pace, creativity, and lethal finishing ensures that Nigeria will be one of the most feared offensive sides at AFCON 2025.
