CAF Fines Algeria Over Misconduct in AFCON 2025 Quarter-Final Against Nigeria

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has imposed fines and disciplinary sanctions on Algeria following incidents that occurred during their AFCON 2025 quarter-final clash against Nigeria’s Super Eagles.

CAF confirmed the decision in an official communiqué sent to the Algerian Football Federation on Wednesday, January 21, 2025, citing multiple breaches of disciplinary and security regulations during and after the match.

What Happened Between Nigeria and Algeria?

According to CAF’s findings, the Algerian Football Federation was found guilty of several violations, including improper conduct by players and team officials, confrontations with match officials after the final whistle, and a failure to adequately control team behaviour during the defeat to Nigeria.

CAF described the actions as unacceptable and contrary to the principles of fair play, stressing that such conduct undermines the integrity of the competition.

Supporter Misconduct Also Cited

Beyond incidents on the pitch, CAF also highlighted misconduct from Algerian supporters as a contributing factor to the sanctions. The governing body cited the use of flares, throwing of objects onto the pitch, and lapses in stadium security as serious concerns.

These incidents, according to CAF, posed safety risks and violated competition regulations.

How Much Did CAF Fine Algeria?

The Algerian Football Federation was fined a total of approximately $100,000, covering both team-related and crowd-related offences.

In addition to the financial penalties, CAF imposed player suspensions that will be served during Algeria’s AFCON 2027 qualification matches. CAF stated that the sanctions are intended to send a strong message that indiscipline will not be tolerated, particularly at major continental tournaments.
