Senegal have officially dismissed reports claiming head coach Pape Thiaw refused to travel with the national team to the United States ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, describing the rumours as completely false.
The Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) released a statement to clarify the situation after widespread speculation suggested Thiaw declined to board the team’s flight due to unresolved contract negotiations.
Reports circulating across parts of Africa alleged that the 45-year-old manager’s contract with the federation had expired in February, leading to uncertainty over his future and supposedly disrupting Senegal’s World Cup preparations.
However, the FSF has firmly rejected those claims, insisting that the delay in the team’s departure was purely caused by logistical and administrative issues.
According to the federation, Senegal’s scheduled flight to the United States encountered several setbacks linked to the late approval of operating licences for the chartered aircraft, as well as pending visa clearances for members of the coaching staff.
“The FSF categorically denies the unfounded rumours suggesting that the national team manager refused to travel on grounds related to the renegotiation of his contract,” the federation stated.
While confirming that discussions regarding Thiaw’s contract extension are ongoing, the federation emphasized that negotiations have not affected the team’s focus or preparations for the tournament.
The development comes at a crucial moment for Senegal, who are widely regarded as one of Africa’s strongest contenders heading into the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Since taking charge in December 2024, Thiaw has enjoyed an impressive start to his tenure, guiding the Lions of Teranga to Africa Cup of Nations success earlier this year and strengthening hopes of another historic international campaign.
Senegal recently announced a provisional 28-man squad for the tournament, with the final list expected to be reduced to 26 players by June 1.
As part of their preparations, the Lions of Teranga are scheduled to face the United States in an international friendly on Sunday before another warm-up fixture against Saudi Arabia on June 10.
Drawn in Group I alongside France, Norway, and Iraq, Senegal will be aiming to make a strong impact on the global stage despite the recent off-field speculation surrounding their head coach.
