Tems Reveals the Surprising Career She Might Have Chosen Without Music

Grammy-winning Nigerian singer Temilade Openiyi, popularly known as Tems, has offered fans a rare glimpse into an alternate version of her life one where music wasn’t part of the picture.

During a recent Q&A session with fans on X, Tems shared that she might have become a mathematics teacher or even an accountant if her music career hadn’t taken off. When asked what she would be doing otherwise, she responded candidly:

“I would have been a mathematics teacher or maybe an accountant.”

The revelation surprised many fans, highlighting Tems’ strong academic interests a side that often goes unnoticed behind her soulful voice and global acclaim.

Before stepping fully into the world of music, Tems worked as a digital marketer. In January 2018, she made the bold decision to leave her corporate job to pursue music full-time. Just months later, in July 2018, she released her debut single “Mr Rebel,” which gained attention in Nigeria and marked the beginning of her ascent in the industry.

Her international breakthrough arrived in 2020 with her feature on Wizkid’s global hit “Essence.” The track became a cultural phenomenon, peaking at number nine on the Billboard Hot 100 following a remix with Justin Bieber. The success catapulted Tems into worldwide recognition and solidified her place as one of Nigeria’s most influential music stars.

From potential math teacher to global sensation, Tems’ journey shows just how transformative a single leap of faith can be.
