Omah Lay Sparks Debate with Bold “Best of the Last 20 Years” Claim Ahead of
Clarity of Mind
Nigerian Afrobeats star Omah Lay is once again at the center of conversation in the music industry this time for a bold and unapologetic statement about his place in the game.
In a recent interview with Nandoleaks, the Port Harcourt-born singer didn’t hold back, confidently declaring himself among the very best to ever do it in Afrobeats. In fact, he went a step further, suggesting that only Burna Boy stands alongside him when it comes to musical quality and artistry.
“I don’t want to brag too much, but I am the best at this… When it comes to art, like making music, I am the best of the last 20 years. Maybe the only person that sometimes I put myself with is Burna Boy.”
Setting Himself Apart in Afrobeats
With that statement, Omah Lay effectively separates himself from the broader Afrobeats landscape, positioning his craft in a tier he believes only Burna Boy shares. It’s a perspective that has immediately sparked debate both among fans and within the industry.
However, this isn’t unfamiliar territory for the singer. Back in 2025, he made similar waves on X (formerly Twitter) after declaring himself the greatest of his generation, hinting that his next body of work would back up his claims.
Now, all eyes are on his upcoming sophomore album, Clarity of Mind, which he is presenting as a defining moment in his career.
The Road to Clarity of Mind
The journey to Clarity of Mind has been anything but straightforward. Omah Lay previously revealed that he scrapped an entire version of the album after a respected artist allegedly sampled a sound he had shared privately. Rather than proceed with a compromised vision, he chose to start over rebuilding the project from the ground up.
The result is a 12-track album scheduled for release on April 3, 2026, supported by singles like Holy Ghost (2024), Waist (2025), and Don’t Love Me.
According to the artist, the album is deeply introspective, diving into themes of mental health, personal struggles, and complex relationships. Much like his debut project, Boy Alone, listeners can expect raw emotion and unfiltered storytelling but with a more refined and ambitious execution.
Confidence or Controversy?
Omah Lay’s remarks have ignited strong reactions across social media. Supporters view his confidence as a necessary trait for greatness, applauding his self-belief and artistic conviction. Critics, however, question whether such a claim holds weight, especially considering his relatively recent rise compared to long-established Afrobeats icons.
Still, bold declarations have always been part of the music industry’s DNA often serving as both a marketing catalyst and a personal statement of intent.
A Defining Moment Ahead
Whether seen as confidence or controversy, one thing is certain: Omah Lay is entering this new era with a clear mindset and something to prove.
As anticipation builds around Clarity of Mind, the real test will be whether the music itself can match the magnitude of his claims. If it does, this album could mark a significant turning point not just in his career, but in the evolving narrative of Afrobeats.
