Lionel Messi Extends Inter Miami Contract Until 2028, With Future Ownership Role Confirmed
It’s official Lionel Messi is staying in Miami. The Argentine icon has signed a three-year contract extension with Inter Miami, keeping him at the Major League Soccer club until 2028.
The announcement, made via Inter Miami’s social media channels, featured a video of Messi signing the new deal inside the soon-to-open Miami Freedom Park, the club’s state-of-the-art stadium set to debut in 2026.
This news comes just days before Inter Miami’s 2025 MLS Cup playoff opener against Nashville SC on Friday, October 25, 2025. Despite experiencing minor back discomfort earlier in the week, head coach Javier Mascherano confirmed that Messi is fit and expected to play.
Messi’s extension follows what many consider one of the most remarkable seasons in MLS history a campaign likely to earn him his second consecutive league MVP award. Since his arrival in 2023, Messi’s impact has gone far beyond the pitch, reshaping the visibility and commercial strength of soccer across North America.
MLS Commissioner Don Garber reflected on his influence:
“When Lionel Messi chose MLS, it transformed everything not only for Inter Miami but for soccer in North America as a whole. We’ve witnessed something extraordinary: the greatest player ever drawing global attention to our league. We’re beyond thrilled that Leo will continue his journey here.”
Under his previous deal, signed in 2023, Messi earned $20.445 million per year, making him the highest-paid player in MLS a title he’s expected to retain under his new agreement.
Born on June 24, 1987, Messi will turn 39 during the 2026 FIFA World Cup and 41 by the final year of his new contract, potentially marking an incredible 25 seasons in professional football if he fulfills the full term.
Beyond his playing career, Messi’s long-term commitment to the club extends into its ownership. According to USA Today, a unique clause from his 2023 contract ensures that upon retirement, he will join Jorge Mas, Jose Mas, and David Beckham as a co-owner of Inter Miami solidifying his legacy both on and off the field.
While Messi recently hinted that his World Cup qualifying match in September 2025 could be his last, he stopped short of ruling out participation in the 2026 World Cup. For now, one thing is clear: Messi’s story in Miami and in football is far from over.
