D’Banj Opens Up on Mo’Hits Split, Reveals Don Jazzy Initiated Their Separation
Nigerian music icon D’Banj has shed new light on the highly publicized split between him, Don Jazzy, and their legendary label Mo’Hits Records, offering fresh insight into what really led to their separation more than a decade ago.
Speaking on a recent episode of the Mic On podcast with Seun Okinbaloye, D’Banj revealed that contrary to long-held assumptions, it was Don Jazzy who initiated the breakup. This directly contrasts with the narrative many fans believed since 2012, when Don Jazzy announced the end of Mo’Hits, citing disagreements between him and D’Banj.
“It Came From Don Jazzy 100 Per Cent”
Reflecting on their journey, D’Banj made it clear that he holds no regrets and no grudges.
He said:
“If I were to go back in time, I wouldn’t have done anything differently regarding my relationship with Don Jazzy, especially when the idea to go our separate ways didn’t come from me. It came from Don Jazzy 100 per cent. And that’s why we have no issue.”
The singer went on to reveal that Don Jazzy handed him 100 per cent of his catalogue along with several unreleased songs during the split, a gesture that D’Banj described as significant and generous.
A Global Vision and ‘Oliver Twist’
D’Banj explained that despite Don Jazzy’s reservations at the time, he felt a strong push to expand internationally and cement his global ambition. The split did not derail that vision; instead, it culminated in the worldwide success of “Oliver Twist”, the final track the duo worked on together.
“No Regrets, But I Miss the Collaboration”
While emphasizing that their separation was part of destiny, D’Banj admitted that he misses the creative synergy he once shared with Don Jazzy.
“It was a journey for me… I knew that we needed to cement that global movement, and I’m glad God still did it for us with ‘Oliver Twist.’”
He added that although he doesn’t regret the split, the bond they shared in the studio remains unforgettable.
