Eric Chelle Explains Why Stanley Nwabali Could Miss Nigeria vs Uganda AFCON 2025 Clash

Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has revealed why first-choice goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali may be absent when Nigeria faces Uganda in their final Group C fixture of the AFCON 2025 tournament.

Speaking during his latest pre-match press conference, Chelle confirmed that Nwabali is currently managing minor knee and ankle issues sustained during Nigeria’s recent victory over Tunisia. The update comes as the Super Eagles prepare to take on Uganda on Tuesday, with qualification for the Round of 16 already secured.

Injury Concerns After Tunisia Win

Nwabali appeared to aggravate a pre-existing injury during Nigeria’s tense 3–2 win over Tunisia on Saturday. The Chippa United captain was seen twisting awkwardly while attempting to prevent Tunisia’s opening goal, raising concerns about his fitness for the final group-stage encounter.

Following the match, the goalkeeper openly discussed the physical toll the tournament has taken on him, highlighting his commitment to playing through discomfort for the national team.

“I was injured, but with the help of the team doctors and physios, I’m able to stand on the pitch and play,” Nwabali said. “It is quite tough for me because it’s not something you come out to say, but I always try to be strong and represent my country.”

Chelle Keeps His Cards Close

Addressing the situation on Monday, Coach Chelle also confirmed that midfielder Frank Onyeka is dealing with an ankle problem. However, the Super Eagles boss remained non-committal about his starting lineup, suggesting there could be a “surprise” when Nigeria lines up against Uganda.

“Nwabali has a small knee pain, and Frank is dealing with an ankle issue,” Chelle explained. “We will take care of the situation for the team. I need to consider the whole squad, and we still have one training session to go.”

Goalkeeping Options Available

With Nigeria already guaranteed a place in the knockout stages after victories over Tanzania (2–1) and Tunisia (3–2), Chelle may decide to rest his star goalkeeper to preserve his fitness for the latter stages of the tournament. Should Nwabali be ruled out, Francis Uzoho and Amas Obasogie are available to step in between the posts.

Nigeria currently sit top of Group C with six points, while Uganda head into the final group match aiming to secure their own progression in the competition.
