Motsepe Breaks Silence on AFCON 2025 Final Controversy

Patrice Motsepe has addressed the ongoing controversy surrounding the final of the AFCON 2025 Final between Morocco national football team and Senegal national football team.

The President of Confederation of African Football defended the governing body’s decision, insisting that the actions taken were both fair and in line with established regulations, despite widespread criticism from football stakeholders across Africa and beyond.

Motsepe Defends CAF’s Decision

Motsepe revealed that he had personally presented medals, prize money, and the trophy to Senegal’s players immediately after the final. However, he stressed that CAF was ultimately bound to enforce its rules once further developments emerged.

“I gave Sadio Mané the gold medal! I gave Kalidou Koulibaly the gold medal! I gave Sadio Mané the trophy! I gave Sadio Mané 10 million American dollars! However, I must follow the law and respect the rules.”

What Happened in the AFCON 2025 Final?

The controversy stems from events during the final, which was marked by tension and several disputed officiating decisions. Multiple incidents during the match sparked debate, with critics questioning whether the game was managed to the standard expected at Africa’s premier international tournament.

Months after initially crowning Senegal as champions, CAF announced a dramatic reversal, awarding the title to Morocco. The decision was based on allegations that Senegal had walked off the pitch during the match an action considered a violation of tournament regulations.

Senegal’s Response and Appeal

In response, the Senegalese Football Federation has challenged CAF’s ruling by filing an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). The case is expected to determine the final outcome of one of the most controversial moments in recent African football history.

As the situation unfolds, the decision from CAS will be crucial in either upholding CAF’s ruling or potentially restoring Senegal’s status as champions, bringing closure to a dispute that has divided opinion across the football world.
