AFCON 2025: Senegal March Into Quarter-Finals After 3–1 Win Over Sudan
The Teranga Lions of Senegal have continued their impressive quest to lift the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) trophy for the second time in the last three editions, following a commanding 3–1 victory over Sudan.
Senegal have looked dominant since the start of the tournament, sweeping aside every opponent they encountered during the group stage. Sudan became the latest team to fall victim to the reigning African champions as the Teranga Lions booked their place in the quarter-finals of AFCON 2025.
How Senegal Defeated Sudan
The knockout clash delivered early drama as Sudan stunned Senegal with an opening goal inside the first six minutes. Aamir Abdallah ignited Sudan’s hopes with a brilliant curling strike from the edge of the box, finding the top-left corner and catching Senegal cold at the Grand Stade de Tanger.
However, Senegal responded with composure and authority. Pape Gueye emerged as the hero, scoring a crucial brace before half-time to turn the game on its head. His goals restored Senegal’s control and silenced Sudan’s early momentum.
As Sudan pushed for an equaliser in the second half, Senegal sealed the contest in the 77th minute, when Ibrahim Mbaye found the net to make it 3–1 and confirm the Teranga Lions’ progression.
Senegal Extend Remarkable AFCON Record
With the victory, Senegal extended their unbeaten run at the Africa Cup of Nations to 15 matches (10 wins, 5 draws), dating back to their 2019 final defeat to Algeria.
Only two nations have ever recorded longer unbeaten streaks in AFCON history:
Nigeria – 16 matches (1992–2002)
Egypt – 24 matches (2004–2017)
The statistics further underline Senegal’s status as one of the tournament favourites.
Who Will Senegal Face in the Quarter-Finals?
Senegal will now await the winner of the Mali vs Tunisia clash to determine their opponent in the AFCON 2025 quarter-finals, as they continue their bid for continental glory.
